The Routine

Blue posts, same man.

Day after day,

pint after pint.

Aged but not old,

tired but not sleeping.

Awaiting ‘a visiting friend’,

that’s the line today.

Tomorrow it’ll be

‘a business meeting’.

Thursday might be

a funeral.

I don’t ask,

enquire, assist.

I simply pass by.

I hope he won’t be there,

but dread if he’s not.
